Cardboard Skaters

by Eric Chaet

The little cardboard figures are skating around the floor
the child moves them around with his fingers
enraptured
soon he too will be skating around on real ice
only wait til he has got the skates & habilitated himself
only wait til he is bigger, stronger, more adept
he will be one of the people
he is unaware of investments & return on investments
deeds, shares of stock, liability
of domination or exploitation
of the varieties of normal madness
of tribalism, resentment, hidden agendas
of the struggle for money, taxation, inflation
of what’s between the floor & the ceiling below it
of what’s inside the furnace, phones, computers
he moves the little cardboard skaters around the floor
enraptured.
