People had me convinced
most of my life
that I was argumentative—
because I refused to validate
the hypocritical cover stories
of tyrants great & not so great
& of everyone who had adapted to roles
in the destructive & unjust hierarchy—
or to compete for the privilege
of being paid off & left alone.

“Thus, a good man, though a slave, is free; but a wicked man, though a king, is a slave. For he serves, not one man alone, but, what is worse, as many masters as he has vices.” – Augustine, City of God
