On My Wife’s Birthday

by Eric Chaet

When I say I miss you—it’s you I miss—
not this or that about you—
the beautiful & the ugly
the sweet, sour, & bitter
supportive & undermining
child-like & childish
running around crazy & composed
truly helpful & only imagining you’re being helpful
talkative & quiet
open & secretive
loving & quarrelsome
stupid & enlightened & wise
trapped in the past & getting free & moving forward
healthy & sick
sleep-walking, habitual—& aware & deciding—

the one & only you—
sometimes I’m missing you.
