8.3 You Wouldn’t Be My Friend

crossed arms

by Eric Chaet

You wouldn’t be my friend
you wouldn’t help me
do what I was doing
you wouldn’t help me
help myself & help you, too
had to put me in my place
had to show me I was just
another member of the human race
had to keep back even a smile
couldn’t even say,
“See you in a little while!”
you had to hide your light
had to keep from me
everything but night
had to be wrong if I was right
& you couldn’t be wrong
had to be the stronger
had to teach me triumph
doesn’t come so easily
you had to burst my dream
you couldn’t let me waltz my way to victory
never asked how I got this far
figured I’d hitched a ride in some fat cat’s fancy car
easier to think I was like some loser you’d expected to meet
couldn’t face me if I was who I said I was
had to hide from me til at least one of us was dead
couldn’t lead & wouldn’t be led
had to show me I was just another member of the human race
you wouldn’t listen, covered your ears
hid your aspirations & also your fears
you wouldn’t be my friend.
